The essays in Sorbino’s latest collection bear on one of the most pressing signs of the times: the existence of a “crucified people,” the poor, oppressed and marginalized of our world. Their suffering presents Christian faith with an urgent demand – that we “take them down from the cross.”

Writing from the Salvadoran context, Sobrino presents a “theology of mercy,” reflecting on the principles of mercy and solidarity as the mode of Christian witness and discipleship in a world of conflict and daily crucifixion.

Jon Sobrino, S.J., is a Spanish-born Jesuit theologian who has lived in El Salvador for more than two decades. His many books include Spirituality of Liberation, Christ the Liberator and Jesus the Liberator, Witnesses to the Kingdom, and No Salvation Oustide the Poor. With fellow Jesuit Ignacio Ellacuria he has edited Mysterium Liberationis: Fundamental Concepts of Liberation Theology.
