ECOLOGY & JUSTICE SERIES

“Whether you are a pastor, student, theologian, or concerned believer, this book offers a timely resource for reading Scripture with open eyes and listening hearts attuned to the cry of the Earth and of the poor as outlined by Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’.” –Sébastien Doane, Université Laval; author, Reading the Bible amid the Environmental Crisis
“Clear, concise, and compelling!” –Alicia D. Myers, associate professor, New Testament, Baylor University; research fellow, University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa

“I highly recommend this ground-breaking, accessible book, which will gift the reader with profound and challenging insights!” –Kathleen P. Rushton, RSM, independent researcher, Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand

First John is not immediately thought of as one of the environmentalist texts of the Bible, but Rodolfo Felices Luna’s fresh approach to its themes of life and love reveal a rich inheritance for both eco-critical readings of scripture and faithful Christian action for environmental well-being. Here, Luna explicitly challenges interpretations of First John that only consider the human while ignoring our place in the whole household of creation. He deftly and accessibly takes up Pope Francis’s calls for an integral ecology in the life of faith, animating our reading of and living from scripture.

Rodolfo Felices Luna is associate professor, sacred scripture, Oblate School of Theology, San Antonio, TX. He earned his PhD from Université de Montréal, Canada. His research spans the Johannine Literature and the rhetoric of New Testament letters.
