⭐Advance Praise and Reviews⭐

"This is a very practical and accessible introduction... a worthy successor to Paul Tillichs popular and well-worn text The Dynamics of Faith (1957)."--Dermot A. Lane, Mater Dei Institute of Education, Dublin, Ireland

"I recommend this readable book for all who are interested in sorting out what is genuine, good and truthful in their own inevitable faith commitments."--John F. Haught, Georgetown University

"Hands-on and accessible . . . Tilley brings refreshing lucidity to perhaps the most complicated issue of our day--faith.""--Serena Jones, President, Union Theological Seminary

"Destined to become standard college reading."--Michael H. Barnes, University of Dayton

"An excellent point of entry into the complex question of faith in a religiously plural world."--Anne M. Clifford, Iowa State University

“Over the last ten years, I've come to see Tilley's Faith as an indispensable resource for challenging students' misconceptions and expanding their understanding of the meaning and significance of faith. This new edition is simultaneously more accessible and more comprehensive: it clarifies key ideas and provides a rigorously-developed framework for understanding how faith—in its many forms—shapes our world.”—Paul Schutz, Santa Clara University

“I love teaching this book! With nuance, clarity, and wit, Tilley makes the foundations of theological inquiry and religious studies accessible and enjoyable for modern students.”—Brianne Bell Jacobs, Emmanuel College
“The wisdom and insights gained from a lifetime of profound thinking are evident throughout this excellent guide to the meaning of faith—broadly construed.  Clear and accessible while also deeply thought-provoking, this beautiful book will be an invaluable companion to college students as well as to mature adults grappling with their faith or lack thereof. I know of no better book to lead people through the process of thinking about what most matters to them.”—Mary Doak, University of San Diego

“With rare clarity and intellectual generosity, Tilley shows that faith is far more than assent, sentiment, or religious affiliation; it is, at its heart, a way of being in relationship. In a world increasingly marked by alienation, this book challenges us to consider how we are called to relate to one another and to God. Thoughtful and illuminating, it invites readers to reflect on the faith commitments that animate our lives and inform how we live together in the world.”—Ryan G. Duns, SJ, Marquette University

Designed especially for the classroom and general readers, this book is a basic primer on the meaning of faith, distinguishing that from false understandings. The original edition was published in 2010.

Terrence W. Tilley is professor emeritus, Fordham University, where he served as Avery Cardinal Dulles SJ Professor of Catholic Theology. He has served as president of the Society for Philosophy of Religion, the College Theology Society, and the Catholic Theological Society of America, which awarded him their prestigious John Courtney Murray award in 2012..
