“In Conquest or Leaven, David Neuhaus, SJ, gives the reader a front-row seat on events unfolding in the world’s most volatile region. His autobiographical approach offers an engaging narrative of the frightening and conflicting confluence of violence and non-violence, history and geography, politics and society, dialogue and intolerance. The outcome is a sobering, incarnational exegesis and a contextualized theology that challenges our imagination and understanding of salvation in the present context of Palestine/Israel.” ―Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator, SJ, dean and professor, Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University
“If you wish to understand the disaster that is going on in the Holy Land, you need to read this profoundly informative and insightful book by a courageous man who is not afraid to speak the truth in a world of denial.” ―Elisabetta Piqué, co-author, The Election of Pope Leo XIV
“A superb reflection by one of the most, if not the most, reliable, experienced, and knowledgeable Catholic writer on this important issue.” ―Fr. James Martin, SJ, author, This Our Exile

Writing from Jerusalem, an Israeli Jesuit priest brings his unique experiences to bear, weaving together theology, history, and political analysis with care and compassion. Conquest or Leaven challenges Christians and all people of good will to grapple with questions of violence and nonviolence, peoplehood and land, partition and dialogue, history and community, society and marginalization.

David M. Neuhaus, SJ, is a member of the Society of Jesus (Near East Province) and is a member of the Jesuit community in the Holy Land. He teaches scripture at the Seminary of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Beit Jala, at Bethlehem University, at the Salesian Theological Institute in Jerusalem, and in numerous other frameworks. From 2009 to 2017, he served as Latin Patriarchal Vicar for Hebrew Speaking Catholics in Israel and as coordinator of the Pastoral Among Migrants within the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
