“I cannot imagine a better duo to tell the exciting story of the election of Leo XIV, the first American-born pope. Gifted journalists, expert storytellers, and the most ‘inside’ of all inside-the-Vatican correspondents, Gerard O'Connell and Elisabetta Piqué bring their deep, and very personal, knowledge of Pope Francis (who was close to both of them), their peerless understanding of the conclave process, and their international experience to a book that reads, in places, like a thriller. This is un-put-downable reporting!”—James Martin, SJ, author, Learning to Pray
“Gerry and Betta, the Dream Team of Vatican journalists, have spent most of their lives doing beat journalism the old-fashioned way: cultivating sources, establishing credibility, and making friends over the course of years, and even decades. The fruit of that work shows in The Election of Pope Leo, a gift for anyone who cares about the future of the Catholic Church.”—Greg Burke, former Director of the Holy See Press Office
“O’Connell and Piqué recount how Francis’s vision of a Church that goes to the peripheries found its unexpected fulfillment in the election of Leo XIV, a pope with roots in both Chicago and Chiclayo. This is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the missionary Church of today.”—Kim Daniels, director, Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, Georgetown University
From the death and funeral of Pope Francis, to the behind-the-scenes maneuvers as cardinals arrive in Rome, to the surprising election of Pope Leo XIV: Here is the story behind the headlines, as told by two of the Vatican’s most trusted correspondents.
Elisabetta Piqué is a correspondent for La Nación, the Argentine daily published in Buenos Aires, and author of three books including Francis, Life and Revolution (Loyola Press), which was adapted into a film. During last year’s conclave she served as Vatican analyst for CNN international.
Gerard O’Connell, Vatican correspondent for America Magazine, is the author of three books including The Election of Pope Francis: An Inside Story of the Conclave that Changed History (Orbis Books). He served as Vatican analyst for CTV (Canada) during the past three conclaves, and also as contributor to BBC, Al Jazeera, ABC, NBC, ARD television in Germany, as well as various radio and television networks.
