Overview

“An expansive interdisciplinary synthesis. Father Zanotelli directs his open letter to a largely Western audience whose re-education, conscientization, and spiritual redemption are imperative for embracing a pluralistic humanity. This matrix of mutuality is urgently necessary to save us all from the convergent moral, political, economic, and ecological catastrophes that jeopardize our planetary existence” —Faye V. Harrison, Center of African Studies and the Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

“Zanotelli recounts the lessons of life, faith, and theology learned in the shantytown of Korogocho in Nairobi and exhorts Christians in the Global North to examine their hearts and minds, histories and prejudices [A] a powerful witness that should be read by anybody interested in the Christian call to justice, peace, and solidarity.”—Daniel P. Horan, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, author, White Catholic’s Guide to Racism and Privilege

Father Alex Zanotelli, an Italian missionary priest, served for many years among the poorest of the poor in a slum in Nairobi. Over time, his beloved community shared their hearts and lives with him and ultimately “commissioned” him to minister to and evangelize the members of the white world whose systems of oppression continue to harm so many in African countries and the Global South. Written during the COVID-19 epidemic Letter to the White World fulfills that commission.

Alex Zanotelli, mccj, served for sixty years as a member of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. The author of several books in Italian, he’s taught and ministered in Sudan, Italy, and Nairobi and currently serves with the Parish of the Basilica of Santa Maria Della Sanità in the poorest district of Naples on profound social problems of, and in service to, marginalized communities in the Sanità district: the homeless, migrants, and the Roma. He has founded and been the inspiration for various movements for peace and social justice.
