Christian de Cherge - Modern Spiritual Masters
By: Christain S. Krokus and Habib Zanzana
Overview
“Blessed Christian de Chergé is one of the key figures for Catholic-Muslim dialogue in the last century. This marvelous book situates the life and work of de Chergé, and provides a beautiful translation of his thought into English. One hopes it will be widely read, taught, and discussed.” —Amir Hussain, Loyola Marymount University; past president, American Academy of Religion
"[These] uncommonly beautiful writings will not only inspire practitioners of Christian-Muslim dialogue, but also gratify anyone seeking deep spiritual insights on fraternity, fidelity, death, and faith.” —Rita George-Tvrtković, consultor, Vatican Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue; professor of theology, Benedictine University
“Christian Krokus and Habib Zanzana have done immense service, ensuring the preservation and dissemination of the wisdom of one of the great spiritual giants and martyrs of our time. This book will be an important source of inspiration not only for Christians engaged in dialogue with Islam, but for anyone searching for God in and beyond religious tension and discord.” —Catherine Cornille, Boston College
Christian de Chergé (1937-1996), a French Trappist, was prior of Our Lady of Atlas Monastery in Tibherine, Algeria. In 1996 he and six members of his community were kidnapped and killed. From the film “Of Gods and Men,” many will know of their decision to remain in solidarity with their Algerian-Muslim neighbors, even at the risk of their lives. Yet, de Chergé’s significance extends far beyond the events of his last days. His was a Christian spirituality rooted in hope, conversion, humility, constancy, and what he called the martyrdom of love. In 2018 he was beatified by Pope Francis.
Christian S. Krokus is professor of theology at the University of Scranton. He is the author of The Theology of Louis Massignon: Islam, Christ, and the Church.
Habib Zanzana is professor of world languages and cultures at the University of Scranton. He is an editor of Gender in French Banlieue Cinema: Intersectional Perspectives.
