What they see and experience overseas also profoundly affects and changes them. Considine, M.M., (1897-1982) was one of the leading figures in Catholic mission in the twentieth century—this despite his never having served in an overseas mission assignment. From the time of his entry in 1915 into the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers until his retirement in the mid-1970s, Considine was a tireless researcher, promoter, organizer of Catholic missions and their support institutions, an innovator in global communications, and respected mission scholar. As the first director of the bishops Latin American Bureau he played a key role in promoting U.S. mission to Latin America in the 1960s. Ahead of his time in espousing a post-colonial view of mission, Considine was an early proponent of World Christianity, racial justice, and the brotherhood and sisterhood of all the world's peoples. This book offers the first critical assessment of his life and contributions during a turbulent and dynamic period in the history of the modern church.

With a doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Robert Hurteau is currently director of the Religion and Spirituality Program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. It was originally published soon after his death in a Chinese prison camp. Concerned with the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christians, it remains a classic of twentieth-century spirituality. As Fr. Benedict Groeschel writes in his introduction, “It offers an insight into the soul of a man who was eventually to pay for his spiritual convictions with his life. In some ways it also gives an insight into the entire missionary effort of the American Catholic Church in the first part of the twentieth century.” And it continues bear a message for all Christians about the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of prayer, mission, service, and discipleship.

Bishop Francis X. Ford (1892-1956) was the first recruit to the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, joining the new mission society right out of high school. Following his ordination he was also one of the first group of four Maryknoll missioners sent to China. After many years of service in southern China he was named the first bishop of Kaying. After the Communist Revolution he was arrested and charged with espionage. Enduring harsh treatment, he died in prison on February 21, 1952. His cause for canonization is in process.
